Using Non-treated Douglas Fir
Build yourself a healthier, more natural home!
Waimea Sawmillers have been manufacturing quality timber products from sustainably managed forests in Nelson for over 50 years. We’re proud to be at the forefront of sustainable building practice – offering a chemical free timber framing option for local home owners, and developing engineered wood solutions that can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of commercial buildings.
We’re proactively working with local councils, architects, engineers, builders and home owners to help them understand the benefits of building with Wai Fir – our locally grown, untreated Douglas fir timber framing. Its natural resistance to moisture and decay means Douglas fir can be used extensively without any preservative treatment. And because logs are locally sourced and processed, Wai Fir products used in Nelson buildings are actually carbon negative – that means there is more carbon “locked” in the timber than has been emitted during its production.

Hybrid Homes is proud to be working with Waimea Sawmillers and ITM Building Centres to offer clients a healthier, more natural option for their timber framing. In the Nelson-Tasman region we’re lucky to have a large, sustainably managed Douglas fir resource on our back doorstep, providing a renewable source of naturally durable timber for local houses. By working with these local partners, Hybrid Homes can build healthier, more sustainable homes using Wai Fir and at the same time support local businesses and the community.
Wai Fir frames and trusses touch local hands all the way through the supply chain – from planting and harvesting the trees and trucking logs to the mill, to manufacturing the timber and the frames and trusses and delivering them to your site. Few building products have such a truly local and sustainable supply chain. And their quality is guaranteed.
Douglas fir timber has been used and trusted in New Zealand homes since the 1930s. It is a specialist structural timber renowned for its strength, stability, stiffness and natural resistance to moisture and decay.
